Photographs Real ! What?
Photographers must "see" the end of the picture at the begining. Training the eye and mind to view the sene or object for what it is or what it could be.
Creative photography isn't as much technical manipulation as it is capturing the obvious.
Many people see the Duck picture and imagine snow is what they are swiming in. Then surmising that this is not the case asume the possibility that the photograph has been manipulated.
The effect is a simple fact of the light green of alge comes out as light white in black and white film. Knowing this when I make the picture helps me be creative with the subjects.
Reflections on Binions pond is a photo that many people want to turn over because the trees at the top are pointing down. The fact that it is a reflection is not immediatly apparent. Also because the trees in the frame are also down. Seeing this effect through the lense and arranging the sujects in an interesting way makes the photograph seem sureal.
This Photo "Spring Shoot" is effective for what is symbolises both death and life. Destruction and creation. Still while it is obviously a bullit with a plant growing from it I have been asked if I set it up that way. Did I put the plant in it or is it digitaly produced ?
Curious questions to me but understandable too. The bullit and plant were found together as you see them. My only inspiration was that they were a photograph that had to be made.
4 Comments:
"Spring Shoot" has three layers of meaning to the word "shoot":
1. The plant is a new shoot.
2. The casing of the round that has been shot
3. The photograph itself is a shot.
This is a very interesting and meaningful piece. There is also the obvious irony of an element which causes death playing host to the birth of new life. In a wider sense, the photograph itself is lifeless, even to the point of killing the reality of the world in the sense that it captures only an instant, forcing it to become still, forever. Yet, when we look at the dead photograph, we may feel newly born emotions and thoughts which may take root in our heart and soul. This, I would say, is the deeper meaning of this piece.
The others are equally facinating.
There is an invisible language being spoken. A communication that enters the space between, where thoughts and emotions are expressed in ways that reach beyond words. When a man reaches for a camera because something is speaking to him and he feels passionate about framing that story in a moment in time, there is something about him that glows on the inside, yet we cannot see it until his work resonates with us. When someone feels driven to express himself, whether it is through photography, music, painting, etc, there is another level to that person's existence. It is a place in the soul that only an artist is familiar.
Artists were given the ability to use the tools around them to manifest their emotions into something physical. But moreover, they have an inexplicable commitment and enthusiasm to go further and further into their path in order to tell their story. They feel the need to fine tune their methods and techniques, and yet they mostly see their shortcomings, never quite satisfied with the end result - that passion to say it perfectly. Artists are driven by and guided by their Muse - that spiritual advisor, that spark of inspiration like a firefly at dusk.
Dale knows this invisible language very well. His Muse is ever-present on his shoulder. I have spent many hours listening to his thoughts about his painting and photography and I leave feeling energized, as if I could have talked for a few more hours. He is articulate and expressive in his words and it is no surprise to discover that his photographs speak the same language. To know Dale is to understand that you cannot separate this man from his art. He's not the world's best photographer, nor is he the best painter that the human race has known. But I can safely say he is as passionate about it as any of the masters. A great artist doesn't require adulation from the masses to be considered an artist. Dale is a true artist - a great one in my book - and I know that others will recognize that too. Keep up the great work, Dale. You will be noticed. You will be rewarded and encouraged by enthusiasts. You will also remain driven. Just stay on the steering wheel and don't let life's curves in the road take you off your path.
Thank you for the thoughtfulness of these comments. I am inspired by your expressivness. Now I have been joined by another person when creating my thoughts in this two dimentional form I use.
Well said.
I couldn't agree more.
And I am eagerly awaiting new postings to this blog. :)
