A Painting from High School

This is a painting I did in a high school art class in 1971 or 72. All of the things come from a still life the teacher set up.

I remember the still life had many many items on a table in the classroom. We were told to draw the still life as it was as realisticly as possible but we only would have that one time to do so. As the still life was gone the next day.

We then were told to take our drawing and make another picture from the things we had been able to draw from the previous day. Only this time the things could be rearanged to our liking.
The next day we were told to put away that drawing and from our memory only paint or draw another . Only this time we were to do anything we liked but could only use the items we had drawn in the previous drawing. this would then be our final painting.

The yin yang was not in the original still life but at the time I was into I-Ching and took the artistic liberty of including it in my final painting.

"YIN YANG" ink and watercolor on paper 18x24

Crtomir you asked what the pink thing was in many fo the picturs I post . Well it is a simple clip I use to hold the painting on th easle. You see I paint on a flat table an then clip them to a stand to look at them from a distance.

As to my needing a stamp I do want one. I am planning on having one made with the characters for Valley and Mountain carved. I choose those characters because Dale is a valley and Goorskey is a mountain.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bogomila I thank you for the kind words. I however do not use stick ink just yet. I use bottle sumi ink from the art store. Untill I can afford the ink stick and stone.

The need for calming myself for painting is true. My pleasure in the is in the whole process and I do much better if I ponder the subject for a time befor I paint. I do wish I had a teacher.

Hi Dad!

I was looking for this painting of yours for a long time. This painting was always very strange to me, but I guess that's okay. It is very interesting too.

I also remember a squirrel drawing you did. I liked that one. I remember looking through boxes in the attic of that really old wooden house in Willis when I discovered this drawing notebook of you and your squirrel drawing. It was a big surprise for me, because I never remember you drawing or painting anything growing up. I guess, life just weighs you down sometimes and it's so easy to get side-tracked. I don't draw like I used to. I should start again. I'm working on learning the violin with Dersu now, though.

So, maybe you could post some of your old drawings.

Thanks for showing your work. I'm glad you are not "hiding" your good work away in boxes in the attic anymore. :)

What a great painting Dale. I was surprised to discover your surreal side! This one looks like a cross between Salvador Dali, Dr. Seuss and Maurice Sendak. It doesn't appear to be in a frame...which is a pity. It should be prominently on display. I look forward to the day when I get the invitation to your opening night at a downtown gallery. I enjoy watching out for your new updates. All the best, Bruce.
